Can links trigger spam filters (e.g., URL shorteners, number of links)?

Links are heavily scrutinized by spam filters because they often point to malicious destinations. Several link characteristics can trigger filtering.

Quantity matters. Emails crammed with dozens of links look suspicious. A few relevant links are normal; excessive links suggest spam.

URL shorteners like bit.ly raise flags because they obscure the true destination. Spammers use them to hide malicious URLs. Many corporate filters block shortened links entirely.

Link reputation is evaluated. URLs pointing to known malware, phishing, or spam domains add significant points. Filters query real-time URL blocklists during analysis.

Mismatches between displayed text and actual URL are major red flags. If the visible text says "Click here to visit BankOfAmerica.com" but the link points elsewhere, filters treat this as phishing.
