How important are subject lines for deliverability vs engagement?
Spammy subject lines share behavioral patterns, not just vocabulary: deception, manipulation, and over-promising. It's not about words—it's about intent and execution that feels sketchy to recipients and algorithms alike.
Patterns that feel spammy: False personalization ("RE:" or "FWD:" on a marketing email). Fake urgency ("URGENT: Action Required" for routine promotions). Excessive punctuation (!!!, ???). ALL CAPS EVERYTHING. Bait-and-switch (subject doesn't match content). Vague sensationalism ("You won't believe this..."). Claims too good to be true ("Make $10,000 today!").
Ask: would this feel manipulative in any other context? If a salesperson used these tactics in person, would you trust them? The same instincts apply to email. Write subject lines that are honest, relevant, and respectful. Clever is fine; deceptive isn't. Urgency can work when genuine; manufactured urgency erodes trust. The subject line is your first impression—make it honest.
