What is real-time URL rewriting?
URL rewriting replaces links in email with proxy URLs that route through security systems. When recipients click, the proxy fetches and analyzes the destination before redirecting, enabling time-of-click protection.
Benefits: catches threats activated after email delivery (delayed weaponization), provides click-time rather than delivery-time analysis, and creates audit trails of link activity.
Implementation: security gateways rewrite URLs automatically, proxies analyze destinations using reputation and content scanning, blocked links show warning pages. Most enterprise security platforms include URL rewriting.
