What are sextortion scams?
Sextortion threatens to release sexual content unless victims pay. Scam versions have no real content; they leverage embarrassment fear. Real sextortion involves actual compromising material, often obtained through catfishing or relationship manipulation.
Scam sextortion uses: vague threats without specific evidence, breached passwords as intimidation, cryptocurrency demands, and mass distribution. Recipients who have no compromising content should recognize the scam.
Real sextortion is more targeted, often involving actual images obtained through deception. Victims should: not pay (doesn't stop escalation), report to law enforcement, and document all communications. Organizations exist to help victims.
