Who maintains RFCs?

The IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) maintains RFCs through an open standards process. The IETF is a global organization of network designers, operators, vendors, and researchers who develop internet standards through working groups and public discussion.

The RFC Editor handles publication and maintains the official RFC archive. RFCs go through review processes before publication, with different tracks (Standards Track, Informational, Experimental) indicating their authority level.

Anyone can participate in IETF discussions and propose specifications, though the process requires technical expertise and consensus building. The open nature ensures standards reflect broad input while maintaining technical rigor.
