What is SMTP handshake validation?

SMTP handshake validation is when the validator opens a connection to the recipient server and sends partial commands from the SMTP conversation such as HELO, MAIL FROM, and RCPT TO. The validator never sends a full message, but it observes how the server responds to these steps. These responses indicate whether the mailbox is valid or not.
