Why is “from name” manipulation dangerous?
Manipulating the From name to impersonate trusted entities is a phishing technique that triggers aggressive filtering. Using names like "PayPal Security" or "Your Bank" when you are neither is dangerous.
Filters cross-reference From names with sending domains and DMARC records. A message claiming to be from "Microsoft Support" but sent from an unrelated domain fails this validation and faces severe penalties.
Even less obvious manipulation causes problems. Using a personal name to appear more intimate when sending bulk mail can backfire if recipients do not recognize you and report the message as spam.
Brand impersonation can also lead to legal consequences. Companies actively monitor for unauthorized use of their names and may pursue legal action or blocklist requests.
Flying a false flag is the fastest way to be identified as a threat. Use your genuine identity and let reputation build naturally.
