What actions count as negative signals (deletes, spam reports, ignores)?
Filters recognize several user actions as negative engagement signals that indicate the recipient does not want the sender's mail.
Spam reports are the most damaging signal. Clicking "Report Spam" or "Junk" explicitly tells the filter this mail is unwanted. These reports aggregate into sender reputation.
Deleting without reading suggests the content is not valuable. While less severe than spam reports, consistent deletion patterns indicate disinterest.
Consistently ignoring messages signals that the mail is not important to the recipient. Messages that remain unopened over time contribute to negative reputation.
Moving to spam from inbox has the same effect as reporting spam. It teaches the filter that previous inbox placement was wrong.
Every negative action is a vote against your ship. Accumulate enough, and the harbor closes its gates.
