How do you update MX records safely without downtime?
Safe MX migration process:
Before changes:
Lower TTL to 300 seconds, wait for old TTL to expire.
Ensure new server is ready and accepting mail.
During transition:
Add new MX with appropriate priority (same or lower than old).
Keep old MX records active.
Monitor delivery to both old and new servers.
After verification:
Remove old MX records once new server is confirmed working.
Raise TTL back to normal values.
The overlap period ensures no mail is lost during propagation. Both servers receive mail, preventing gaps.
Open the new dock before closing the old one. Keep both operational during the transition.
