What is a recommended TTL for MX records?

MX record TTL recommendations:

Normal operation: 3600-14400 seconds (1-4 hours)

Balances caching efficiency with reasonable update speed.

Before migration: Lower to 300-600 seconds

Allows faster failover if issues occur.

Do this 24-48 hours before planned changes.

After migration: Raise back to 3600+ seconds

Once stable, reduce query load.

High availability: Some prefer shorter TTL (1800 seconds) for faster failover to backup MX servers.

MX changes are relatively rare. Longer TTL is usually fine for stable configurations.

Docking assignments rarely change. Longer validity periods reduce registry queries.
