What happens if PTR and HELO don’t match?

HELO/EHLO alignment with PTR:

What HELO is: The hostname your server announces when connecting to another server.

Ideal configuration:

  • HELO: mail.tidalmail.com
  • PTR: mail.tidalmail.com
  • A: mail.tidalmail.com → 192.0.2.1
  • All three match.

Mismatch consequences:

  • Looks like misconfiguration or spoofing attempt
  • Some receivers reject mismatched HELO
  • Reputation systems penalize inconsistency

Common causes:

  • Server hostname not updated after IP change
  • Shared hosting with generic HELO
  • PTR never configured to match
  • Align HELO, PTR, and forward DNS for all sending IPs.

Ship announces one name, papers show another. Inconsistency invites inspection and suspicion.
