What happens if PTR and HELO don’t match?
HELO/EHLO alignment with PTR:
What HELO is: The hostname your server announces when connecting to another server.
Ideal configuration:
- HELO: mail.tidalmail.com
- PTR: mail.tidalmail.com
- A: mail.tidalmail.com → 192.0.2.1
- All three match.
Mismatch consequences:
- Looks like misconfiguration or spoofing attempt
- Some receivers reject mismatched HELO
- Reputation systems penalize inconsistency
Common causes:
- Server hostname not updated after IP change
- Shared hosting with generic HELO
- PTR never configured to match
- Align HELO, PTR, and forward DNS for all sending IPs.
Ship announces one name, papers show another. Inconsistency invites inspection and suspicion.
