When should I stop following up?
Knowing when to stop is as important as knowing how to start.
Clear stop signals:
- Explicit unsubscribe request (legally required to honor)
- Direct request to stop contacting them
- Hostile or negative reply indicating no interest
- Spam complaint received
Implicit stop signals:
- No engagement after 5 to 6 total messages
- Pattern of opens but no replies after multiple attempts
- Out-of-office replies indicating extended absence or role change
- Bounce indicating job change or address invalidation
When to pause rather than stop:
- Timing seems wrong (budget season, holidays)
- They indicated future interest but not now
- Significant company changes suggest revisiting later
Practical threshold: After 4 to 6 emails without response, the person has answered. They're not interested, at least not now. Continuing beyond this point damages reputation and wastes resources.
A wise captain knows when the voyage is complete, even without reaching the intended destination.
