What is an MTA Engineer?

**MTA** Engineers manage **Mail Transfer Agent** systems: configuring, optimizing, and maintaining the software that routes email. They work with systems like Postfix, **PowerMTA**, or **Halon**, tuning performance for high-volume delivery.

Responsibilities include: **MTA** installation and configuration, performance optimization, queue management, authentication setup, monitoring and alerting, and troubleshooting delivery issues at infrastructure level.

Role context: most organizations use **ESP** infrastructure without dedicated **MTA** engineers. Large ESPs, hosting providers, and enterprises with internal email infrastructure employ **MTA** engineers. It's a specialized system administration role.
