What happens if DNS lookup fails?

If DNS lookup fails, the sending MTA cannot determine the correct MX server for that domain. The message is deferred and placed into the retry queue.

If DNS continues to fail across repeated attempts, the message eventually bounces. DNS failure is equivalent to losing the destination coordinates. A ship cannot sail without knowing which harbor accepts the cargo.
