What is a delivery delay?

A delivery delay occurs when the receiving server accepts the connection but postpones accepting the message. This results in a temporary SMTP code such as four two one or four five zero.

Delays often happen due to high load, greylisting, or temporary authentication issues. The sending MTA retries until the server becomes available. It is the harbor raising a red flag and asking incoming ships to circle until the docks clear.
