What happens when an email is deleted?

When an email is deleted, it usually moves first to the trash or deleted items folder. From there, it can be permanently removed after a set time or manually purged.

Some systems retain deleted mail temporarily for recovery or auditing, depending on organizational policy.

It is like tossing unneeded documents overboard temporarily before the cleanup crew removes them for good, but records of those discarded papers may still remain in the ship's manifest or logbook. Similarly, deleted emails may persist in backups or server logs for a while before they truly disappear.
