What are “per-domain throttling” best practices?

Per domain throttling best practices involve respecting individual provider limits rather than sending at maximum speed to all destinations. Each mailbox provider has different tolerance levels that your sending should accommodate.

Monitor response codes from each domain. 421 errors requesting slower sending should trigger automatic throttling. Continue normal speed to domains responding positively while slowing to those requesting it.

ESPs typically handle per domain throttling automatically. Self managed infrastructure requires implementing these controls. Ignoring provider throttling requests damages reputation and may escalate to blocking.
