How can you tell if Gmail rate limits are in effect?

Gmail rate limits manifest through specific error codes and delivery patterns. The most common indicator is 421 errors with messages like "try again later" or references to sending limits. These temporary rejections mean Gmail is throttling your sending speed.

Other signs include delayed delivery where messages accepted by Gmail take hours to appear in inboxes, and sudden drops in delivery rates to Gmail addresses while other providers remain unaffected. Gmail Postmaster Tools may show delivery errors spiking.

Rate limiting typically triggers when you exceed volume thresholds for your reputation level, send too quickly from new or low reputation IPs, or experience sudden volume spikes that look suspicious. The solution involves slowing sending speed, spreading volume over longer periods, and warming up gradually if you are on new infrastructure.
