What exactly counts as an open?

An open is recorded when the invisible tracking pixel inside the email is loaded. This does not confirm a human read the message. It only confirms that the pixel was requested by the recipient’s mail client or proxy.

For example, when [email protected] opens your newsletter in Gmail.com, Gmail requests the pixel from your ESP’s server. That request is logged as an open.
