What is “IP warming” and how does it affect reputation?
IP warming is the process of gradually increasing sending volume on a new IP address to establish positive reputation with mailbox providers. It typically takes 4 to 8 weeks depending on target volume.
New IPs have no reputation. Providers treat them cautiously until enough data accumulates to assess trustworthiness. Warming provides that data in a controlled way by starting with small volumes to engaged recipients and scaling incrementally.
Skipping warmup or ramping too fast triggers defensive filtering. Providers interpret sudden high volume from an unknown IP as likely spam behavior. The result is aggressive throttling, spam folder placement, or outright blocks.
Warming is like a new ship completing supervised test voyages before gaining full trading privileges. Each successful delivery extends your allowance until you earn the right to sail at full capacity.
