How to automate segment updates?

Most modern ESPs support dynamic segments that update automatically based on defined rules. Instead of manually adding subscribers to a segment, you define criteria such as last purchase within 30 days or opened three emails this month, and the platform continuously re evaluates membership.

For data stored outside your ESP, set up scheduled syncs between your CRM, CDP, or data warehouse and your email platform. Tools like Zapier, Segment, or native integrations can push updated attributes on an hourly or daily basis, triggering segment recalculation.

Real time behavioral triggers offer the fastest updates. When a subscriber takes an action like completing a purchase or visiting a pricing page, a webhook or API call instantly updates their profile and moves them into the appropriate segment. Platforms like Braze and Iterable excel at event driven segmentation.

Build fallback logic for edge cases. What happens if the sync fails or data arrives late? Ensure subscribers don't receive incorrect messages because of timing gaps between data update and campaign send.
