How do business role and department segmentation work?

Business role and department segmentation divides your audience by their function within an organization. You might separate decision makers from end users, or segment IT professionals from marketing teams. This approach works because the same product solves different problems for different roles.

Role segmentation includes criteria such as job title, seniority level, and department. A CFO cares about ROI and risk. A developer cares about integration and documentation. A VP of Sales cares about team productivity and revenue impact. Sending the same message to all three wastes the opportunity to speak directly to each person's priorities.

The challenge is data quality. Self reported job titles are inconsistent. Someone might enter Chief Technology Officer while another enters CTO and a third enters Head of Engineering. Data enrichment tools can help standardize titles, but they introduce cost and privacy considerations. Segment by role when the role genuinely changes what matters in your message, not just because you can.
