What’s the difference between topic-based and frequency-based preferences?

Topic based preferences let subscribers choose what kind of content they receive. Examples include newsletters, promotions, product updates, event invitations, or educational resources. This segments by interest and ensures subscribers only get content that matches their stated priorities.

Frequency based preferences control how often emails arrive. Options might include daily, weekly, monthly, or event triggered only. This addresses email fatigue without losing the subscriber entirely.

The two work together. A subscriber might want promotional content but only once a week. Another might want daily newsletters but no promotional emails. Combining both types creates a flexible system that respects individual tolerance and interest.

Most effective preference centers offer both topic and frequency controls. This gives subscribers granular control and reduces the chances they unsubscribe out of frustration.

Topic controls steer the cargo. Frequency controls the pace of the voyage. Together they create a journey the subscriber wants to take.
