How do blocklists work?

Removal processes vary by blocklist, but the pattern is similar: identify the cause, fix it, then request delisting.

Step 1: Understand why you were listed. Most blocklists tell you the reason. Spam trap hits? Complaints? Volume anomalies? You can't prevent recurrence without understanding the cause.

Step 2: Fix the underlying problem. If you hit spam traps, clean your list with a validation service like Review My Emails. If complaints spiked, review your acquisition sources and content. Requesting removal without fixing the problem leads to re-listing.

Step 3: Request removal. Each blocklist has its own process:

Spamhaus: Use their lookup tool, follow the removal instructions for your specific listing type.
Barracuda: Online removal request form.
SpamCop: Automatic expiration if no new complaints; manual request otherwise.

Timing varies: Some blocklists remove within hours. Others take days. Some require you to wait while they monitor your behavior.

Prevent re-listing: Address root causes. Improve list hygiene. Monitor continuously. Getting removed twice from the same list is harder than once.

Like a sailor clearing their name with port authorities, you must first stop whatever behavior got you flagged, then formally request reinstatement.
