What does a high spam score mean?

A high spam score means the message triggered multiple indicators that are associated with spam. The more points accumulated, the more confident the filter is that the message is unwanted.

In SpamAssassin, a score above 5.0 typically triggers spam classification. Scores above 10.0 suggest severe issues. Scores above 15.0 may result in rejection rather than spam folder delivery.

High scores usually result from compounding problems: authentication failures plus suspicious content plus reputation issues. A single severe violation, like a blocklisted IP, can also push scores into the danger zone.

Receiving systems handle high scores differently. Some deliver to spam. Some reject outright. Some quarantine for review. The threshold and action depend on the receiving organization's policies.

A high spam score is like a ship arriving with too many inspection violations. Minor issues are tolerable; accumulated problems trigger denial of entry.
