What is SpamRats and its specialized lists?

SpamRats operates several specialized blocklists targeting specific types of problematic senders. Rather than one general-purpose list, they maintain focused lists for dynamic IPs, missing PTR records, and known spam sources.

Impact Level: Low. SpamRats lists are used by some smaller mail systems and SpamAssassin configurations but aren't heavily weighted by major providers.

SpamRats zones:

  • dyna.spamrats.com - Dynamic/residential IP ranges that shouldn't send directly
  • noptr.spamrats.com - IPs without valid reverse **DNS** (PTR) records
  • spam.spamrats.com - Known spam sources
  • all.spamrats.com - Combined zone (all three lists)

What triggers listing:

  • Dyna: IP identified as dynamic/residential range
  • NoPtr: Missing or invalid reverse **DNS**
  • Spam: Detected sending spam to SpamRats traps

How to check: Visit spamrats.com/lookup.php or query directly via **DNS**.

Delisting:

  • Dyna/NoPtr: Fix the underlying issue (get static IP, configure **PTR record**)
  • Spam: Automatic expiration after spam stops, or request manual review

SpamRats focuses on infrastructure problems - if your ship doesn't have proper registration papers (PTR) or is sailing from a residential dock (dynamic IP), they'll flag it regardless of your cargo.
