What is “alignment” in DMARC and how is it checked?

For SPF alignment DMARC compares the visible From domain with the domain in the SPF authenticated envelope from.

For DKIM alignment DMARC compares the visible From domain with the domain in the DKIM d tag.

If the domains match directly or match organizationally alignment passes.
