How do readability scores apply to email content?
Readability scores (Flesch-Kincaid, Gunning Fog, etc.) measure how easy text is to read based on sentence length and word complexity. Lower grade levels = easier reading. Most advice suggests 6th-8th grade reading level for broad audiences.
In email, readability matters because readers have limited attention and patience. Complex sentences and fancy vocabulary slow comprehension. People reading on phones, between meetings, or while distracted need text that communicates instantly. High readability isn't dumbing down-it's clarity.
Write for how people actually read email: quickly and distractedly. Check your copy in readability tools. If sentences consistently exceed 20 words, break them up. If you're using words your audience wouldn't use in conversation, simplify. The goal isn't passing a test-it's being understood immediately by real people in real contexts. Readability scores are a useful diagnostic, not a destination.
