What’s the max recommended total weight for an email?

The widely recommended maximum is 100KB for HTML code, with total email weight (HTML + images) ideally under 250-300KB. These aren't hard limits but practical guidelines for performance and deliverability.

Why it matters: Gmail clips emails over ~102KB of HTML (shows "[Message clipped]" with a link). Mobile loading suffers with heavy emails on slow connections. Some spam filters flag unusually large emails. User experience degrades with slow-loading content.

Lighter is always better. Optimize images aggressively, minify HTML where possible, avoid unnecessary code bloat. If your email approaches Gmail's clip threshold, you're probably including too much content anyway-consider linking to a web version for detailed content. Test total weight before sending; most ESPs show this metric.
