What is video embedding vs thumbnail linking?
Video embedding attempts to play video directly within the email using HTML5 video tags. Thumbnail linking uses a static image (often styled to look like a video player) that links to the actual video hosted externally.
Reality check: True video embedding works in very few email clients-mainly Apple Mail and iOS Mail. Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and most others ignore or break HTML5 video. Thumbnail linking works universally-every client can display an image with a link.
Thumbnail linking is the practical choice. Create a compelling video thumbnail with a prominent play button overlay. Link to your video on YouTube, Vimeo, or a landing page. Recipients click, video plays in browser. The user experience is nearly identical, but it works for 100% of recipients instead of 10%. Save true embedding for email clients you've specifically targeted and tested.
