What is the “References” header?
The References header is the breadcrumb trail of a conversation. It lists all previous Message-ID values in a thread so that email clients can reconstruct full conversation chains.
While the In-Reply-To header points to a single parent message (the one being directly replied to), References provides the full chain of Message-ID entries starting from the very first message in the thread. This is how mail clients rebuild an entire conversation even if some intermediate replies go missing.
Imagine a captain’s log showing every previous voyage before the current one—that’s what this header does for email discussions. When messages get long and tangled, References keeps the history intact.
