What is an MTA vendor?

An MTA vendor provides the server software responsible for transporting email between systems using SMTP. Classic engines include Sendmail (the original, created in 1983), Postfix, Exim, and PowerMTA. These engines handle queueing, retries, throttling, and routing.

The landscape has expanded well beyond those early options. Commercial platforms like PowerMTA, Halon, GreenArrow, and Momentum offer enterprise-grade analytics, traffic shaping, and professional support. On the open-source side, KumoMTA brings high-volume enterprise features like adaptive delivery, bounce classification, and Lua-based configuration without licensing costs. Most organizations never deal with MTA vendors directly because their ESP handles the infrastructure behind the scenes.
