What is backscatter and why is it a problem?

Backscatter occurs when a receiving server accepts a forged message and later generates a bounce to the spoofed sender address. This results in innocent domains receiving floods of bounce messages for mail they never sent.

Backscatter harms reputation, wastes resources, and confuses users who see failure notices for messages they did not send. It is like receiving angry letters about cargo you never shipped.
