What is connection throttling?

Connection throttling occurs when a receiving MTA limits how many simultaneous connections or messages a sender may transmit. Providers use throttling to prevent abuse, protect resources, and slow down senders with poor reputation.

A sender exceeding these thresholds receives temporary deferrals. It is the harbor restricting the number of ships allowed to enter at once to keep sea lanes safe.
