What is the difference between a mail client, a mail server, and an MTA?

A mail client is the user's interface, a mail server is the system that handles message storage and delivery, and an MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) is the engine that moves the mail between servers. There's also the MDA (Mail Delivery Agent), which performs the last-mile delivery.

It is like comparing the captain's cabin (client), the harbor office (server), and the ship that sails between them (MTA). When the ship arrives, the dockworker (MDA) unloads the specific cargo for Captain Kraken and places it neatly in his warehouse (the mailbox file).
