Do bounced emails count toward my Klaviyo send limit?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

A send in Klaviyo is any email that leaves the system. Your plan limits two things, the profiles you can email and the emails you send. A bounce uses up one before it frees up the other.

Send to an address that no longer exists? That costs you a send. Received or bounced, both count toward your plan limit. Skipped emails do not.

What happens next is free. After a hard bounce, or 7 soft bounces in a row, Klaviyo suppresses the address, and a suppressed profile no longer counts toward your plan. So the first bounce is the one you pay for. Soft bounces cost a send each too, so a mailbox that keeps soft bouncing can use up 7 sends before it stops.

On the free plan, the limit stops you. The free plan allows 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month. Go past it and sending stops until the next billing cycle or an upgrade. On a 500 send month, 50 bounces are a tenth of it.

Keep the suppression. A hard bounce is permanent, so there is no second try. That suppression is the record that stops you paying for the same bounce again. Delete the profile instead and the record goes with it. If the address comes back in a later import or sign-up, it can arrive as a new profile, and the first send to it bounces all over again. If you ever do delete, keep your own do-not-email record first. More on what a delete does to a bounce.

Fewer bounces, fewer wasted sends. The Almanac's fix for a high bounce rate is checking the list before the next large send. Checking addresses before they go into Klaviyo means your send limit goes on people who can actually receive your email.

I use Klaviyo on the [plan name] plan with [number] email sends a month. My last [number] campaigns had a bounce rate of about [number] percent, and my list has [number] active profiles. How many sends am I losing to bounces each month, and what should I check before my next large send?

  • How Klaviyo billing works (updated 20 Oct 2026): "Klaviyo charges for any messages that leave the system: any received or bounced emails count toward your plan limit, but skipped emails do not."
  • Understanding suppressed email profiles (updated 30 Mar 2026): profiles are suppressed when "An email hard bounced" or "An email soft bounced 7 consecutive times".
  • How to manage email suppressions and delete profiles in bulk (updated 11 Mar 2026): "a person can enter your Klaviyo account as a new profile if they engage with your website again (e.g., submitting a sign-up form)."
  • Klaviyo pricing, UK: "On this tier, you are limited to up to 250 active profiles (contacts who may receive marketing emails) and 500 email sends per month." Go past it and "your account will no longer be able to send additional emails or messages until the next billing cycle or until you upgrade to a paid plan."
