What happens if I go over my Mailchimp contact limit?
Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?
A contact limit is the most contacts your Mailchimp plan includes. What happens when you pass it depends on one thing: whether you pay.
Imported a trade show list on the 3rd? Archived half of it on the 10th? That month is still billed at the size you reached on the 3rd. Mailchimp bills on the highest number of contacts in the month, so the size of an import matters on the day it lands.
On a paid plan, you are charged, not stopped. Mailchimp keeps your service running and adds an extra, smaller set of contacts to your bill, called an add-on contact block.
On the Free plan, sending stops. The Free plan includes up to 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, with a daily send limit of 250. Go past 250 contacts and Mailchimp holds live and test emails until you upgrade or reduce your contact total.
The paid plans have ceilings too. Up to 50,000 contacts on Essentials, 100,000 on Standard and 200,000 on Premium.
Getting back under. For a short spike, Mailchimp's advice is to reduce your audience and keep the lower total for a full billing cycle. Reducing usually means archiving the people you can't email, such as unsubscribed contacts, who still count toward the bill. Archived contacts stop counting, and Mailchimp keeps their record.
Deleting lowers the count too, but it takes each contact's status with it, unsubscribed or cleaned. Mailchimp then blocks that address from being imported into the audience again, but a new sign-up brings it back, and in any other tool you move to, nothing is left to say it must stay off your list. So archive, and if you ever do delete, keep your own do-not-email record first. More on what a delete does.

I use Mailchimp on the [Free, Essentials, Standard or Premium] plan with a limit of [number] contacts. Right now I have [number] contacts, and I plan to import [number] more on [date]. Will I go over, what would it cost or stop, and what could I archive first to stay under for a full billing cycle?Sources. Mailchimp's own help pages, read 17 Oct 2026, re-checked 23 Oct 2026, every quote still word for word:
- About Mailchimp Pricing Plans: "If your contact total increases beyond your contact limit at any time during your monthly billing cycle, we won't interrupt your service. Instead, you'll see an additional charge on your bill." "The Free plan includes up to 250 contacts and 500 sends per month, with a daily send limit of 250." "If you exceed the 250 contact limit in your Free plan, a hold is placed on sending live emails or test emails until you upgrade to a paid plan or reduce your contact total." "If the increase is temporary, reduce your audience size and keep the lower contact total for a full billing cycle to avoid future additional charges." The same page gives the contact ceilings of Essentials, Standard and Premium.
- About Additional Charges: "we'll charge you for an extra, smaller set of contacts, called an add-on contact block." And "your bill will reflect the highest number of contacts stored in your account that month."
