Do email tools bill you for unsubscribed contacts?
Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?
You might expect that once someone unsubscribes, they stop costing you. In some tools, they don't.
Some email tools still bill you for unsubscribed contacts: Mailchimp counts unsubscribed contacts until you manually archive them, and ActiveCampaign (new accounts since Nov 2025) bills unsubscribed, bounced and unconfirmed contacts.
These are dated findings, from a pricing review on 4 Sep 2026. Tools change how they bill, so open your own tool's billing page and look at which contact statuses count toward your plan.
