How to audit segments for logic conflicts?
Logic conflicts occur when segment rules contradict each other or when subscribers qualify for mutually exclusive segments simultaneously. These conflicts lead to wrong messaging, over mailing, or suppression errors.
Start by mapping all segment criteria in a document or spreadsheet. For each segment, list the conditions required for membership. Look for rules that overlap or conflict, such as two segments that both target customers who purchased in the last 30 days but apply different messaging.
Test with edge case profiles. Create test subscribers that meet multiple segment criteria and trace which segments they enter. If a subscriber belongs to conflicting groups, determine which takes priority and whether that's intentional.
Check suppression and exclusion rules. A subscriber might qualify for a promotional segment but also be in a suppression list. Verify that exclusions apply correctly and that priority hierarchies make sense.
Use overlap analysis tools to identify subscribers who appear in multiple segments. High overlap between segments with different messaging strategies signals potential conflict.
Schedule audits quarterly or whenever significant segment changes occur. Document findings and resolve conflicts promptly.
Ships with conflicting orders sail in circles. Clear navigation rules prevent collisions.
