What are naming conventions for segment management?

Good naming conventions make segments searchable, understandable, and maintainable. When someone else needs to find or modify a segment months later, the name should explain what it does without requiring investigation.

Use prefixes to categorize segment types. Examples include BEH for behavioral, DEMO for demographic, LIFE for lifecycle, or CAMP for campaign specific segments. This groups related segments together in alphabetical lists.

Include descriptive elements that explain the criteria. BEH_HighEngagers_30Days is clearer than Segment_A or Active_Users. Specify timeframes, thresholds, or conditions in the name when relevant.

Add version numbers or dates for segments that evolve. BEH_CartAbandoners_v2 or DEMO_USCustomers_2024Q1 indicates iteration history and helps identify outdated definitions.

Avoid spaces and special characters that cause issues in some platforms. Use underscores or camelCase instead. Keep names reasonably short while remaining descriptive.

Document your naming convention in a style guide that new team members can reference. Enforce consistency through code reviews or approval processes for new segments.

A well named ship needs no explanation when it enters the harbor. The flag tells you everything.
