What is volume ramping and why does segmentation matter for it?

Volume ramping is the practice of gradually increasing send volume when launching a new IP address or domain to build sender reputation without triggering filters. Mailbox providers treat sudden volume spikes as suspicious, so you start small and scale up over weeks.

Segmentation matters because you need to send to your most engaged subscribers first. These are people who consistently open, click, and interact with your emails. Their positive engagement signals tell mailbox providers that your content is wanted, which builds trust and improves placement as you scale.

A typical ramp starts with a few thousand highly engaged contacts on day one and doubles every few days based on performance. Sending to unengaged or low quality segments early in a ramp destroys the reputation you are trying to build. If your first sends generate high bounce rates or spam complaints, providers will throttle or block you before you finish ramping. Volume ramping with poor segmentation is like setting sail in a storm before your crew knows how to handle the rigging.
