What is “probation segmentation” for high-risk groups?

Probation segmentation creates a holding area for subscribers who show warning signs but haven't crossed into fully disengaged territory. Instead of immediately removing them, you isolate them for observation and controlled re-engagement attempts.

High risk indicators include multiple soft bounces, zero opens over 60 to 90 days, spam complaints from similar profiles, or acquisition from questionable sources. These subscribers threaten your sender reputation if you keep mailing them normally, but outright deletion might discard recoverable contacts.

The probation approach sends reduced frequency, highly targeted content to this segment while monitoring response. If they engage, they graduate back to active status. If they remain dormant or generate complaints, they move to suppression.

Think of it as a quarantine harbor where suspicious vessels anchor for inspection before being cleared to enter or turned away. It protects your main fleet while giving borderline cases a fair evaluation period.
