How to segment by generation or age group without stereotyping?
Generational segments only work when they're validated by behavior. Don't assume all Gen Z subscribers want the same tone or that Boomers avoid mobile. Use age as a starting framework, then refine based on engagement patterns, content preferences, and purchase history.
Test your messaging and creative against the segment to see if it resonates. If your Gen X cohort responds better to short form mobile content than long form desktop emails, that tells you more than the label itself. Let actions validate assumptions rather than letting assumptions drive strategy.
Avoid generational clichés in copy and design. References to avocado toast or rotary phones feel performative and often backfire. Focus on value, clarity, and relevance instead of demographic pandering.
Use generation as the vessel type, but steer based on the wind and tide. The label gets you started. The behavior keeps you on course.
