How can I use this data for email targeting?
Job titles reveal role, seniority, and likely priorities. They're one of the most actionable firmographic fields for B2B email.
Segment by decision-making authority. C-suite executives care about strategy, ROI, and risk. Directors care about team effectiveness and metrics. Individual contributors care about features and day-to-day utility. The same product requires different positioning for each.
Segment by function. Marketing, sales, IT, finance, and operations have different pain points and vocabularies. Technical content resonates with IT. Business case content resonates with finance. Speaking someone's language increases engagement.
Account for title inflation and inconsistency. A "Director" at a startup might have the scope of a "Manager" at an enterprise. "Head of Growth" and "VP Marketing" might do similar jobs. Normalize titles into functional categories rather than matching exact strings.
Combine with other signals. Job title alone tells you their role but not their engagement level, buying timeline, or specific interests. Layer title segmentation with behavioral data for better targeting.
Personalization based on title can feel powerful or creepy. "As a CMO, you know..." can resonate or feel presumptuous. Test the tone. Sometimes subtle relevance works better than overt acknowledgment.
