Should I test button text, color, size, or placement?

Prioritize CTA elements by typical impact magnitude:

Button text first: What you say matters most. "Start Free Trial" versus "Get Started" versus "Try It Now" can show significant differences because text affects motivation.

Placement second: Above the fold versus below, near images versus isolated, single location versus repeated. Placement affects visibility and context.

Color third: High-contrast versus brand-consistent, warm versus cool tones. Color affects attention but effects are often smaller than expected.

Size fourth: Larger buttons are generally better but have diminishing returns. Test if you suspect size is limiting clicks.

Test in sequence: Find your best text, then optimize placement for that text, then refine color and size.

Text tells people what to do and why. Visual elements help them do it. Start with the message, then optimize the medium.
