How to avoid “click here” link text?

"Click here" fails accessibility because it has no meaning out of context. Screen readers often present a list of links from the page-imagine hearing "Click here, Click here, Click here" with no surrounding text. Which one leads where?

Better alternatives: Make the link text describe the destination. "Download the 2024 annual report" instead of "Click here to download." "Read our privacy policy" instead of "For more information, click here." "Shop the sale" instead of "Click here to shop."

Link text should make sense in isolation. Read your links without surrounding text-do they tell users where they'll go? Good link text benefits everyone: screen reader users, people scanning quickly, and anyone whose brain processed the destination before registering "click here."
