Which email apps and mail providers are most common?
Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?
Two numbers get mixed up a lot: which app people read their email in, and whose mail servers a domain uses. They answer different questions, and neither tells you who is on your list.
Email apps, by opens. Litmus counts the opens tracked by Litmus Email Analytics. In July 2026: Apple 62.26%, Gmail 27.03%, Outlook 5.83%, Yahoo Mail 2.59%, Google Android 1.45%. Apple's figure is inflated by Mail Privacy Protection preloads. (Source: Litmus, Email Client Market Share.)
Mail servers, across websites. W3Techs counts which provider runs the mail servers (the MX records) for websites. On 24 Sep 2026: Gmail (Google) 17.5%, Microsoft 13.5%, Hostinger 4.1%, United Internet 3.7%, team.blue 2.4%. (Source: W3Techs, Usage statistics of email server providers.)
Use both as context only. Neither is the share of people on a marketing list by mailbox provider.
