Should I delete unsubscribed contacts in Salesforce Marketing Cloud to lower my bill?
Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?
Deleting a contact in Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engagement takes it off your contact count for good. It is also the only way off the count that Salesforce's pages name. That makes it tempting for people who unsubscribed, because they stay on the bill: they can still get transactional sends.
Picture thousands of unsubscribes sitting in your account, each one paid for every year. Delete them and the count drops. So why does Salesforce itself hold back?
Because the opt-out matters more than the saving. Salesforce says that to honour opt-outs, it does not delete contacts in most situations. For email, it keeps some information even after a delete, so unsubscribed addresses get no further messages.
What a delete does. It is final, and Salesforce can't restore it. It removes the contact from your sendable data, tracking and preference information included. If the person is added back later, they get a brand new record with none of the old information. For text message and app push contacts, deleting a contact deletes all of its opt-out preferences too. And for two days by default, you can't send that contact anything, not even a transactional email.
In plain words, the preference record in your own data goes with the contact. The Almanac's suppression and deletion answer shows where that can lead: the address comes back in a refreshed import and gets mailed again. Other tools handle it differently, see what happens when you delete a contact.
If you do delete, in this order:
- Keep the do-not-email record first. Salesforce's own advice is to export to a backup file before you delete anything. Export your unsubscribes, hard bounces and complaints each as its own file and keep the originals.
- Check every future import against those files before it goes in, so nobody who left is mailed again.
- Start with the cheaper wins. Contacts with no email, phone or device, and duplicate Contact Keys, are the ones Salesforce itself names first.
The contract is a separate talk. Salesforce says you can upgrade at any time, but none of its pages we read says how or when a contract can be reduced. That conversation is with your Account Executive.

I use Salesforce Marketing Cloud Engagement on the [edition] edition with [number] contacts, and about [number] of them are unsubscribed from email. My renewal is on [date]. Should I delete any of them to lower the count, how do I export a do-not-email record first, and how do I check future imports against it?Sources. Salesforce's own pages, read 21 Oct 2026, re-checked 23 Oct 2026, every quote still word for word:
- Contact Definition and Count Determination in Contact Builder: "Engagement includes unsubscribed contacts in contact counts because those contacts remain eligible to receive transactional sends." "Deleted contacts don't appear in contact counts."
- Contact Builder Best Practices: "To honor opt-outs, we don't delete contacts in most situations. While you can delete contacts related to Email Studio, this deletion doesn't completely remove their information from Engagement. We retain this information to make sure that the appropriate email addresses don't receive any further messages after unsubscribing."
- Contact Deletion in Contact Builder: "All contact deletion processes are final, and Engagement can't restore deleted contact information." "This removal includes any tracking or preference information." If the contact is added back, "the record receives a brand new unique ID and doesn't retain any of the previous contact record's information." For text message and push contacts: "By deleting this contact, you also delete all opt-out preferences associated with that contact." "The process includes a 2-day default period where Contact Builder suppresses contact information from showing in channel apps such as Email or MobileConnect."
- Contact Delete Best Practices in Contact Builder: "During this time you can't perform any sends, including transactional sends, to that contact." "Export any list or data extension to a backup file before you delete anything".
- Marketing Cloud Engagement Pricing: "You are able to upgrade at any time".
