How have privacy laws affected email history?

Laws such as CAN-SPAM in the United States (2003), CASL in Canada (2014), and GDPR in Europe (2018) forced senders to identify themselves, respect unsubscribes, and in many cases obtain consent before sending.

CAN-SPAM is mostly an opt-out law. CASL and GDPR are opt-in laws which means you must have permission before sending. This is a much stricter standard.

These laws turned email from a free for all sea into a regulated shipping channel where every vessel needs permission to dock.
